Exploring Ayurvedic Practices for Mental Well-being

How does Ayurveda view the role of mindfulness in making conscious choices for your mental well-being?
Ayurveda recommends practices that keep us present and focused. Anxiety and unsettled thoughts often arise from excessive incoming information. The movement of our eyes can affect our thought pace—anything promoting single-pointed focus helps calm the mind. Achieving mental stillness provides a stable foundation for considering our choices.
The Impact of Diet on Mental Clarity
Can you elaborate on how the foods we eat can impact our mental clarity and emotional balance?
Fresh foods are rich in vital energy, known as prana in Ayurveda. “We are what we eat,” so fresh vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts, seeds, and oils nourish the body and help maintain peace of mind. These foods elevate the level of sattva (purity) in our body and mind. By contrast, consuming foods with low vitality—like meat, stale, canned, or processed foods—doesn’t offer the same support and is harder to digest. Although dietary changes take time to show effects, you’ll quickly sense the difference when switching to fresher, home-cooked meals, as opposed to comfort and fast foods.
Navigating the Pressure of Productivity
How can we navigate the pressure to constantly be busy and prioritize self-care and stillness without feeling guilty or unproductive?
Peace comes from understanding and respecting our nature. There’s protection in living according to our true selves and leaning towards our aspirations (dharma). Often, the pressure we experience stems from societal norms, which don’t have to dictate our behaviour. What if stillness and self-care could actually enhance productivity?
Incorporating Ayurvedic Principles into the Workplace
How can I incorporate Ayurvedic principles into my work environment to create a space that supports mental harmony and productivity?
Consider bringing elements such as plants and quiet areas into your workspace. Carry a flask of herbal tea for cleansing and hydration, and opt for a nutritious home-cooked meal for lunch or find local healthy options. Making your workspace comfortable, using essential oils, taking stretching and breathing breaks, and spending time outside during breaks can all contribute to a harmonious work environment. Also, try to avoid stressful or disrespectful interactions.
